FAQs
License
What is licensing? What are licensing fees?
To perform a show, or to do a staged reading of one, for an audience of any size at your theatre, school, library, or other performing space, you must first apply for permission, or a license. Performance licensing fees are how authors earn a living from their writing.
A license also requires you to purchase a minimum number of scripts and/or other materials that reflects the size of each show's cast. Authors earn their living from their scripts being sold, and photocopying scripts violates U.S. copyright law.

Do I need to pay licensing fees if we are not charging our audiences admission?
Yes. Authors earn their living from the licensing fees for their work. Licensing fees apply regardless of the size of the audience, the ticket price, or the number of performances. If an audience is invited to watch a performance, including final dress rehearsals, previews, or school assemblies, licensing fees apply.
How many scripts am I required to purchase in order to perform a show?
Every show has a minimum number of scripts and/or materials required to produce it. If you need more scripts for your production, you can order them during your license application.
Do I still need to purchase the minimum number of scripts if I buy digital scripts?
Yes. Digital scripts cannot be shared or distributed without permission and copying scripts violates U.S. copyright law. The minimum number of scripts, either physical or digital, is required for all productions.
How is my licensing fee calculated?
Your fee is based on details from your application. Your quote shows the fee for your production.
